Right Dog For Me? |

|
The Border Collie is not for the faint of heart! This breed has been bred for decades to work cattle and sheep. Our dogs are bred with the notion that the instinct to herd should be preserved and therefore are suitable for those of you who need a farm hand or want to compete in herding trials. They are MADE of energy. They have a work ethic like NO OTHER breed. The Border Collie does make an excellent pet as long as he is given the attention and exercise required to keep him sane. In other words………….these dogs must have a specific job within the household, and the dog must be allowed to do his job on a daily basis. This job can be playing ball or Frisbee with you or the kids (a good way to get the kids away from the TV), hiking, swimming or jogging etc.. The job must include a lot of activity for the dog. These dogs make excellent therapy dogs as they will retrieve for hours and can be taught to bring the ball or item to the lap of the handler. This provides a great deal of entertainment and joy for those confined by disabilities. There are numerous places where the Border Collie can be of great entertainment with his athletic tricks and drive to show off, and those owners with a more competitive nature will enjoy competing in agility trials and many of the new games for dogs like fly ball. If the energy is not directed in the form of a job, the dog will find work on his own. This will include herding small children, moving household items about the house and occasionally unwanted behavior which may include aggressiveness or destruction of furniture. If you are not prepared to make a commitment to activity for the dog, the Border Collie is not the right dog for you. If you want to experience the intelligence of the Border Collie which is unmatched by any other breed, and you want a dog that is easily trained and ready at your call for action, the Border Collie will more than fulfill your needs.

All our pups are guaranteed to possess the working instinct. Any pup failing to show age appropriate working instinct will be replaced from the next litter.
We recommend: · A crate of adequate size for the dog as an adult, which will be used for house training and confinement in the house and during transport and at the vets. A collar with ID, a choke chain and a leash. LICENCE YOR PET! · Eagle Pack Dog Food is recommended and available through us. We discourage the use of very high protein and very high energy packaged foods as they can cause hyperactivity in this breed. We also discourage the use of ANY food that is a grain based diet, especially those that contain soy or wheat. Stay away from grocery store and commercial brands. Seek out the Whole Dog Journal’s list of approved dog foods to assist you in your choice · Veterinary care is a must for the vaccines and anti parasitic items that will be necessary for your dog to remain healthy. We also advocate spaying or neutering of your Border Collie at an appropriate age. Border Collies will reach sexual maturity at about 6-9 months and should be neutered in advance of this time. · Lots of love and lots of praise. Border Collies are extremely responsive to praise and rewards during training. On the other hand, they are extremely sensitive to correction techniques. A little correction (inevitably unavoidable for any well mannered dog) goes a very long way. If you must err…………..err on the side of overly lavishing praise and dish out correction very sparingly. Often stern words are more than enough for the Border Collie. They aim to please in all things, and don’t be shocked when your Border Collie learns to spell! · TOYS, TOYS, TOYS. Border Collies are obsessed with toys. Balls of all sizes but especially tennis balls, Frisbees, sticks, plastic bottles, etc. etc. etc. are this dogs best friends next to the human who will throw them for him. As important as food and water, toys are an essential part of a Border Collie’s life. You must be prepared to keep them in ready supply and play with him and them regularly. Toys that can be chewed and which are available to your pet at all times (like Nylabones and rawhides) should be supplied from the time your puppy comes home through the teething process. This will save your furniture and your shoes! · ENJOY! |
